This article begins with a discussion of why the use of the term 'stable vices' to describe equine behaviours such as crib-biting, wind-sucking, weaving and box-walking is inappropriate. It then discusses the possible mechanisms of development of such behaviour and why they may be due to failure of horse management to take account of natural equine behaviour and motivations.
